Men's Sock Guide
We have all seen it: A man wearing a black suit combined with white tennis socks, or some German tourist wearing 1980s Adidas tennis socks in combination with Birkenstock sandals. To avoid being one of such fashion eye sores, here are some tips on wearing and matching your socks.White Socks
White socks are for a reason called "Tennis Socks". They are intended for sports and should never be worn unless you are working out or wearing tennis shoes. When shopping for tennis socks make sure they fit well and are made from cotton. Also, keep in mind that thicker socks can be uncomfortable warm and might make your shoes fit too tightly. White socks with suit and tie is one of the worst fashion crimes you could commit!
Ankle Socks
The "sockless" look of shorts and tennis shoes has become quite popular. Not only will you reduce sock tan lines, but you are also staying in touch with current fashion trends.
Business Socks
Most business socks (non-white socks) are made from wool. Avoid synthetic fibers which will give you sweaty feet. When matching your sock color make sure they compliment your dress shoes and pants. Traditioally black pants are paired with black or charcoal socks; gray pants with gray or charcoal; tan pants with brown, beige, or tan socks; and navy pants with navy, charcoal, or tan socks. While these colors will always be acceptable some men want to add some accent color and interesting pattern to their business uniform with colorful socks and wild patterns such as stripes, checks, and polka dots. Pick bold color that lets everyeone know that your sock choice is intentional and not a fashion Faux Pas.
